Rod Cameron - Fine Artist
ROD CAMERON – Commemorative paintings for the International Merrie Monarch Festivals - Hawai'i 2010 and 2011, Mr. Cameron was born in Chicago, but came to Echo Park, Los Angeles at an early age. Formal traing (AA) came from LA city colleges including: extensive self studies, The Otis Art Institute, an internship with painter Keith Ward in Palm Springs, CA and studies at the Art Students League in NY. Rod always had a strong life drawing leaning and therefore studied anatomy and drawing extensively having drawn regularly out of the Jessie Botke’s original California studio. Mr. Cameron began a commercial career in Honolulu designing and illustrating concert posters (including the first Diamond Head Festival bills) and t-shirt designs. This line of work continued in Los Angeles, Ventura/Santa Barbara Counties, CA as an art director and eventually Rod ran his own successful agency, East/West Arts. Clients included: 'The Los Angeles Times,' Warner Brothers Studio Stores, Hasbro, and others. He did display and product at airports: LAX, JFK, and SFO. During this time he was also an adjunct professor at UC Santa Barbara-Extension and illustrated over a dozen children's books. He has been honored with more than sixty awards for art, illustration and design; including a National Ben Franklin Gold and two Silver Awards for the books. His illustrative works are in the collections of the late Laurence Rockefeller, NY and in the University of Connecticut Library Archives. Through work with his toy accounts, Rod began inventing his own toys, holding several US Patents, that were mass marketed throughout the world. __
In 2002, through the royalties from his toys, Rod was able to return to the islands to commence a fine art career. This also includes hosting workshops with an inclusive plein air painting workshop & city tour package in Prague each spring. The contrasts of painting in the 'old world’ is so interesting as Mr. Cameron notes a love for the warm Pacific with its tropical riches, strong peoples, and finds the contrasts with the older European cities both fascinating and inspiring. This inspiration has led to seven highly successful shows in Hawai'i, making Rod one of the most collected and best known painters in the islands. His workshops out of his Beach Road Studio on the Big Island of Hawai'i are always well attended and rather lively events and his models for the Hula are as authentic with utmost attention to detail as they can be. Mr. Cameron’s next exhibit is a one man show entitled “Colors of a Living Volcano” in Hawai’I Volcanoes National Park this March 12, 2011.
Rod Cameron is represented by: The Prague Gallery, Czech Republic, Dreams of Paradise Gallery, Hilo, Cedar Street Gallery, Honolulu and at the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park Gallery. Kindly view 'Events' for the show & workshop schedules for 2011and please watch for The Prague Painting/City Tour on for May 23, 2011.
